If something has gone wrong, saying which iPhone or iPad you are using and what you had just done is usually enough to find it.
It did not write down what I said
The recording is still there. Open the note and press play — the audio is kept unless you have told the app in Settings not to keep it. A transcript can fail in a noisy room or on an unfamiliar word, and losing the words should never mean losing the thought.
It stopped listening part way through
It should not. Only three things end a recording: pressing the button, a forty-five minute ceiling, and something else taking the microphone, such as a phone call — and that last one says so on screen. A long pause is not one of them.
If it happened anyway, please write in and say roughly how long you had been talking. That is exactly the sort of fault worth chasing.
My note went into the wrong project
Open it and press Move. Every note also says why it landed where it did, at the bottom of the note.
A project named after an everyday word, like Home, only takes a note when you put the name first — “Home — book the boiler”. That is deliberate, because “on the way home” is not a filing instruction. A distinctive name or a short alias works anywhere in the sentence.
Nothing was saved when I stopped
If you did not say anything, nothing is saved on purpose, and the app says so. If you did speak and nothing appeared, please write in — that is a fault, not a setting.
Where are my notes kept? Can I get them out?
On your device. The app writes a backup file once a day and keeps the last five, and you can reach them in the Files app under On My iPhone. One file holds every note, picture and recording, so it can be dragged into iCloud Drive, AirDropped or emailed.
Settings has Save a backup file and Restore from a backup for doing it on purpose.
I am getting a new phone
Your notes travel in your iPhone’s own backup, the same way the rest of your phone does. If you would rather not rely on that, save a backup file first and restore it on the new phone.
Do my notes sync between my phone and my iPad?
Not in this version. Each device keeps its own notes. A backup file moved across is the way to do it today.
How do I delete everything?
Settings, then Erase everything. It asks you to type a word first and there is no undo. It does not delete the backup files — that is deliberate, since the point of them is to outlive a mistake — so remove those in the Files app if you want everything gone.
Does it need a signal?
No. Nothing in the app needs the internet, including dictation, which runs on the device.
What does it cost?
Nothing. There is no subscription, no trial and no advertising in version one.
Is there an Android or web version?
No, and none is promised.
